The San Francisco chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its popular monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with a special Film Financing Townhall at the renowned Academy of Art. Their facilities are conveniently located across the street from the Palace Hotel in downtown San Francisco.

This grassroots community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attendees. It provides unbiased insight & education about the business of film and film financing in particular. The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests!

The evening's five seven presentations plus panel discussion address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of motion pictures. They are followed by Q&A time. Attendees also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our featured experts and amongst themselves.

An informal après-meeting celebration will take place at a nearby restaurant.

Host logoThis month's Film Financing Townhall in San Francisco is hosted by the esteemed Academy of Art, a leading private university founded in 1929 in San Francisco. With nearly 10,000 students that occupy its 30+ buildings in downtown San Francisco, AAU is considered the largest private school of art and design in the United States. It offers both traditional on-campus and online distance-education degree and certificate programs in a wide variety of fine arts-related majors, including Motion Pictures & Television and Animation & Visual Effects. Eric Edmeades

Speaker headshot 1Eric Edmeades is the creative and social entrepreneur at the helm of The Kerner Group, a San Rafael, CA based group of innovative and creative companies in the entertainment and technology sectors. Eric's first major entrepreneurial venture was in the IT sector when he founded The ITR Group, a leading supplier, integrator and maintainer of wireless networking and data capture technologies. He co-founded the company in his living room with only a few thousand dollars and soon transformed the company into an industry leader with multiple offices around the UK and clients all over the world. Eric ran ITR for 9 years as the company's Managing Director and then, in 2006, he sold the company to private buyers and retired from the IT sector. For three years following the sale of ITR, Eric travelled the world as an international speaker and business consultant. In early 2009 Eric was introduced to Kerner Optical, formerly ILM and part of Lucasfilm, as a business consultant. In mid-2009, Eric invested in and joined the company with a view to turning the company around. Kerner Optical's team and facility has over thirty years of film production experience including the "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Back to the Future," "Terminator" and "Transformers" movies. More recently, Kerner Optical has provided studio and special effects services for "Red Tails," "Avatar," "I Am Number Four," "Transformers III," "Pirates of the Caribbean IV" and "Cowboys and Aliens." Devyani Kamdar

Speaker headshot 2Devyani Kamdar is the Executive Director of the Palo Alto International Film Festival. She has an entrepreneurial background in publishing, and has worked in editorial and finance on numerous large-format photography books, including the best-selling "Day in the Life" series. Three of the books Devyani worked on were New York Times bestsellers: "A Day in the Life of America," "A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union" and "Christmas in America." Devyani was named a literary laureate of the San Francisco Public Library for her work on "One Year Off," and was director of finance on "A Day in the Life of Africa," a charitable project which benefited AIDS education programs in Africa. In 2005, the start-up she co-founded, DeVie LLC, produced the popular Pink Ribbon Men of Marin Calendar featured on Anderson Cooper, CNBC and Evening Magazine, among others. The Pink Ribbon Men project raised awareness and money for breast cancer research and education. Devyani's involvement in film began during a stint in Japan in the 1980's, when she acted in the Japanese movie "Maboroshi no Mizumi (Lake of Illusion)," directed by Shinobu Hashimoto, was a regular cast member of the TV series "Tadaima Houkago," and had a guest role in an episode of the TV series "G-Men." She is a Stanford graduate with degrees in International Relations and Japanese, Devyani is a world champion XTERRA triathlete, who continues to enjoy cycling and running. (more) »

Daniel Riviera, Esq.

Speaker headshot 3Daniel Riviera, principal of the law firm Riviera & Associates, has over twenty-five years of experience as an attorney in the motion picture industry and has been involved with hundreds of projects ranging from Academy Award-nominated documentaries to major studio releases which have become enormous commercial successes and cultural landmarks. He represents clients involved in all aspects of the motion picture industry, with a current emphasis on guiding independent film productions from financing through the sale of distribution rights. Past clients include: Carolco Pictures, Imagine Entertainment, Spelling Entertainment, the Groundlings, Keiko Matsui & Gilda Radner. Current clients include Academy Award-nominated filmmakers, independent film companies and Internet-based distribution companies. Greg Viloria

BTrax partnered with the most award-winning documentary of 2009, "The Cove" to develop the successful social media strategies that resulted in sellout screenings, consistent demand which influenced theaters to extend the film's run by several weeks, and mentions by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston and Robin Williams. Alf Seccombe

Speaker headshot 7Alf Seccombe is an award-winning filmmaker whose short films have played at Rotterdam International Film Festival and San Francisco International Film Festival. He presently serves as the Director of Media & Programming at Palo Alto Institute (PAI). Prior to joining PAI, he consulted for eight years at Sundance Institute in the Feature Film Program International. As a recipient of an AMPAS Foundation grant, Alf worked with the Romanian New Wave production company Strada Film. He has also received grants from the Milos Forman Foundation and the North Carolina Humanities Council. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Film from Columbia University. Currently, one of Alf's short films is playing on the Brazilian online festival, Fluxus. (more) »

Sheridan Tatsuno

Moderator

Speaker headshot 10Sheridan Tatsuno is a seasoned businessman with over 30 years of experience in the high-tech and urban planning industries. He began his film career by advising a student on a video class assignment, which won the 1980 PBS Documentary of the Year Award, namely "Survivors" about California survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. During Japan's heyday in the 1980s, he wrote two business books on Japan, "The Technopolis Strategy" and "Created in Japan," which were optioned, respectively, by Central Independent Television plc of London for "Japan Dreaming" (1991) and by Alvin Perlmutter Inc. of New York for the four-hour PBS series "The Creative Spirit" (1992). Since 1991, Mr. Tatsuno has written 12 screenplays and is currently writing two screenplays slated for independent production, as well as brainstorming two new scripts. He is a member of FilmAngels and the Institute for International Film Financing. In the high-tech industry, Mr. Tatsuno has advised over 700 companies in the US, Japan, Asia and Europe, while working as a senior analyst at leading market researcher Dataquest/Gartner Group (1982-1989) and his own consulting firm, Dreamscape Global (1989-present). A visionary thinker, Silicon Valley business strategist and thought leader, Mr. Tatsuno was involved with the early stages of the "Intel Inside" marketing campaign, Nokia's global strategy planning, AMD's breakthrough sub-$1000 PC, and Canon's networked equipment strategy. His strength is helping companies develop breakthrough strategies. Currently, he is advising a videoconferencing startup and is conducting surveys on medical imaging, solar panels, fuel cells, batteries for electric cars and smart grids. Mr. Tatsuno has studied in France and Germany, worked in Caracas (Venezuela) and Japan, and traveled on business to Japan, Asia and Europe. He speaks and reads Japanese, Spanish and French. (more) »

Thomas Trenker

An innovative and ambitious social-impact organization, IIFF endeavors to bridge the gap between the worlds of filmmaking and finance for the benefit of all stakeholders including the public at large.
